It seems that Jamba Juice in the Bay Area is still using those nasty styrofoam cups. Sad face.
Yeah I agree 100%. They actually expires quicker than every few years it seems. RSA should really be thinking about how to design the key fob so that they can be reused or have the components easily separated by consumers to insert a replacement subcomponent piece.
All these excessive and unhealthy packaging for groceries is the main reason I don't shop at Trader Joe's. I love their frozen dessert aisle but because I seldom have a reason to go in (fresh groceries being the most common reasons I shop) I don't get to enjoy them as much. I know that if Trader Joe's makes their packaging better, I'd be tempted to switch my grocery habits and go there.

I received a set of coupons in the mail, which is great. But rather than being printed on easily recyclable cardboard, they were on plastic. It has the recycle (#7) symbol on it, but I still think this was wasteful.

I love that you offer in room recycling. Thank you. However the sprinklers are going off every day at 2pm - the hottest time of day. Please ask the gardeners to re-program the sprinklers to do off before 8am or after 8pm. Thank you

I bought a man's shirt that was way overpackaged. 6 straight pins, plastic around the neck, light cardboard on the back, etc. It's no-wrinkle, made in China, but an iron will always be needed before the first wearing, so why all the packaging? It required scissors to open and cut everything. The picture is of all the packaging I had to remove to open the shirt. It couldn't be tried on without destroying the packaging. At least the light cardboard can be recycled.

Gymboree Play and Music requires parents to wear socks on the mat with their kids for hygiene reasons. They provide disposable (horror) socks that look good enough to be laundered and reused. However, instead of a laundry hamper, they provide a trash can next to the socks so that parents can discard them after class. This post-usage treatment is very environmentally irresponsible -- hardly the thing we want to teach our young children.

I'm absolutely shocked ! A cashier picked a plastic ( yes plastic) bag to pack a customers shopping. She indicated that she brought her own bags so he THREW the plastic bag away! I saw the whole thing as I was waiting in an adjacent line. Shame on the individual and TJ for not asking upfront if she brought her own bag and secondly for throwing away a perfectly good bag

I was watching the sushi guys prepare for the day, and noticed a big sign "Sushi Trash" next to a black trash can behind the counter. They threw EVERYTHING into there -- no composting, no separating recyclable. Plus, one of the managers took a look at a container containing overnight? spring onions (it was almost empty) and decided to throw the container (and not the cover) away -- I get the impression he felt it was too much work to clean it. He could have swept out the old veges, rinsed and washed it for reuse!
Also I've been sorely disappointed with the discontinuation of a BYO-bag credit, in lieu of selling consumers re-usable bags at checkout.
In general, I've noticed Safeway lack of concern for the environment and am starting to shy away from shopping there even though it is the closest to my home. After all, Mt View has a farmer's market, Milk Pail, Whole Foods, Nob Hill, and Ranch 99.

Thanks for letting us know about this opportunity in our stores with the sushi bars. The group who manages the contract with the vendor is looking into what we can do about this. We have reached out to the sushi vendor about the possibility of separating food from the plastic tray/other packaging, but regarding the current tray, it cannot be re-used due to food safety issues. We are reviewing our contracts to work with the outside vendor on waste reduction processes.
Also, you mentioned you are disappointed with Safeway’s overall environmental sustainability record—and I appreciate your being upfront and honest about that. We are working to communicate better our track record in this area, and we know this is a work in progress.
Our online CSR report gives more detail at http://www.safeway.com/csr of what we do in the areas of People, Product, Community, and Planet. For example, in the area of waste, Safeway has won the WRAP Award for 14 consecutive years in recognition of our waste reduction and diversion efforts. In the area of alternative energy, we’re the 8th largest retail purchaser of renewable energy per the EPA, and we purchase enough wind energy to power all our stores in San Francisco, Boulder CO, and our headquarters building. And in the realm of seafood, Safeway was just named #1 by Greenpeace in seafood sustainability, ahead of all other US grocery retailers. Several of our Bright Green products just got approval to display the EPA’s Design for the Environment logo. Those are just a few examples of the initiatives we have in the works, but again, we recognize this is a journey we will always be on—and we will always be working to improve.

It is very nice of Capital One to offer me money but your practices are wasteful. Today I got not one but two separate letters with blank checks one; one has no transaction fees at 13.9% and the other with a fee at 5.99%. maybe if you consolidate your offers the money you would save would not only help the environment but also increase profits for shareholders.

I notice that Jamba Juice is no longer using styrofoam cups, but has switched to paper cups! Yay! Many years ago, I complained twice to them via their website and received replies that said they cannot keep beverage cool enough otherwise, even though I cited health concern with styrofoam (esp when my straw pokes the foam cup accidentally). As a result, I stopped going to Jamba Juice even though I own their (fairly worthless) stock JMBA. I applaud JJ for finally making the change. I will go back to JJ now in lieu of coffee as much as possible because it is healthier.

Thank you for taking the time to contact us regarding your concerns with polystyrene (Styrofoam) cups. Your feedback is very important to us. Jamba Juice is engaged in numerous activities focused on creating Healthy Communities. Our Eco-Sustainability Initiative represents our commitment to improving our environmental footprint. From addressing polystyrene cup usage, and expanding the use of organic ingredients, to developing environmentally friendly packaging to reducing waste in recycling, composting, and other areas, we are constantly improving. We have not yet identified the optimum solution for the polystyrene cup one that will assure our customers of the same quality, temperature, consistency, and integrity of product, while also being friendlier to the environment, but please know that rigorous research is underway and progress is being made. We are committed to finding a better solution. In the meantime, we are complying with local ordinances regarding the use of paper cups and offer a $.10 discount to customers who bring in their own or purchase a reusable mug for their beverage. Thank you again for your willingness to reach out to us and please continue to do so in the future. Sincerely, Ayana Jamba Juice Guest Services 1-866-4RFRUIT ( 1-866-473-7848 )

When one buys a regular iced coffee with milk using the Starbucks card, it comes with free refill. I passed the plastic cup to the barista for refill, and held on to the plastic cap and straw to reuse. When she was about to pass it back to me, I showed her that there is no need to put on a new cap. She said, "no, we can't do that -- we can't touch your cap, or reuse, because of virus - health code requirement". I did not ask her to touch my cap, just that she should hand me back the cup without a new cap so I can screw it on myself. This just makes me mad once again at Starbucks employees lack of concern for the environment!!!

Thank you for contacting Starbucks Coffee Company. I appreciate that you have taken the time to let us know inconvenience you have experienced. However, we have a very strict policy that we do not give you cup back to you full of hot coffee unless it has a lid. This is due to liability and injury issues involved with spills from no lid being on the cup. If you have any further questions or concerns that I was unable to address, please feel free to let me know. Warm Regards, Anthony R. I have seen this before, as well. It varies from "new lid" to replacing the entire cup and lid. I also make a point to remove and keep the lid and\or brown sleeve, and feel the need to remind them of how stupid this is when forced to comply. Luckily, the place near me has a few people who are able to think for themselves and do the right thing (just refill). I make a point of thanking them for taking the green road.

The Secure ID issued by E*Trade, and made by RSA Securit expires and gets replaced every few years. My directions from E*Trade are to dispose of it. There must be thousands of these little key fobs in the landfill. Can't they be reprogrammed or at the very least, melted down and used for something? Throwing them in the trash seems completely wasteful.

AND the packaging from E*Trade was a box that was about 8" x 10" thick cardboard with bubble wrap for a little tiny key fob. WASTE!

A friend from New York ordered my wife a gift certificate from a spa in San Francisco and asked that it be delivered 2nd day. (I should mention that we live in San Francisco, about 2 miles from the spa.)
FedEx flew the package to Nashville for routing from its hub, then flew it back to San Francisco for delivery. The gift certificate flew more than 4,600 miles and drove at least 25 to be delivered 2 miles from its origination.
Seriously?

Every time I purchase something at Safeway they automatically bag my groceries, even if I only buy one item. I constantly have to take my items out and explain that I can carry them. If they would ask first, they could save a lot of plastic.
Also, double-bagging the paper bags is also unnecessary with most groceries.
|
||
Company Response
We applaud your commitment to using bags only when necessary. We are happy to skip the bagging option for any customer who requests it. Our goal is to efficiently bag products so customers can easily and safely transport their purchases. Double bagging is used only when necessary. With kind regards, Safeway Inc.

Why is it so hard for retailers to be pro-active (and consumer friendly) about bag choices. "Hi, Welcome to Safeway, how would you like your items bagged?" To Bagger "They brought their own bags for bagging"
This lack of concern and acknowledgement of customer concerns is why residents coalesce to do bag bans.

Despite many posts, it seems we never get replies from Trader Joe's, which is really a shame considering how customer-friendly they are in their stores. Unfortunately, they continue to use non-recyclable plastic bags for many products (Trader Joe's Baby Carrots are the latest one I've noticed), and styrofoam for holding things like mushrooms (when cardboard would work just as well). There's really no excuse for Trader Joe's not addressing these damaging environmental policies by now. I'd certainly be willing to pay a little more to fund these changes. It's great that they carry so many organic products and encourage the use of reusable bags, but they need to do more.
Come on Treader Joe's, prove me wrong. Reply to my complaint and defend your use of non-recyclable plastic bags and styrofoam.
