I agree, but you can buy reusable plastic insulated cups from Jamba Juice (or bring your own). In fact most stores give you a discount on each subsequent purchase using a reusable cup. Fortunately, more and more cities are banning the use of polystyrene in food delivery, forcing companies like Jamba Juice to clean up their act.
Costco -- thanks for your response -- which reaffirms that I like to do business with you guys. I understand that you operate under local law and regulation, but there is another more sustainable approach that the farmer's market in Mountain View has found to follow the same regulation of one-sample, one-use that your Mt View Costco is also subject to. Their approach is to provide tongs that users must use pick up fruit wedges. I believe that your use of single-use cups is to avoid members soiling their hands, but we don't seem to mind when shopping at the farmer's market. Perhaps you can take a look at their best practices and see whether there is any further waste volume reduction possible.
Also, I'd suggest you provide more reduce, reuse, recycle information of your warehouse operation -- both front-end and back-end operations in your store to alleviate concerns members like me may have.
The best solution I can think of (besides allowing cup re-use, which may run afoul of health & safety standards) is to encourage them to use paper cups, small paper napkins, wax paper (or cake liner, as you suggested), or something similar. There's still going to be a lot of waste, but paper and food products are at least compostable and can be put directly into a green bin.
I am wondering where this was? You know some cities like San Francisco have banned styrofoam?

I bought coffee and pastries today, I specifically asked for ceramic cups as we were eating in. The pastries were still put into 2 separate bags instead of plates. It would be really nice if you could train your employees to be more environmentally conscious. Please could you provide them with some waste conservation training?

We love the Kern juices (guava, mango) and our friends too. Recently at a party we decided to read the ingredient list as a group to see what makes it so delicious and were shocked to find high fructose corn syrup. My husband ad I have decided to stop buying kern with sadness. Please let us know when you remove this carcinogenic ingredient so we may enjoy those delicious juices again.

Cave and Cheney of Texas mailed an unsolicited offer to the house. Neither the envelope nor the letter had any conspicuous indication of recycled paper, biodegradability, soy ink or the planting of trees. // I urge the company to become proactive immediately with regard to its waste, so that it be a leader in the financial-services industry. For one, every company office should have green-practices advocates who would look for ways to conserve and recycle. It is inexcusable for any company to wait until compelled to do the right thing. Thank you.

I read someplace that the US uses the equivalent of 8 million trees annually just for store receipts. With that in mind, I really appreciate that Starbucks usually asks if I want a receipt before printing one out. Wish other retailer would follow suit.

Summerwinds is running for Mt View 2010 best green business but they sell iceplants - a horribly non native invasive species. I thought they would be better than Home Depot in this respect... This really makes me think twice about shopping here since I'd started frequenting then because they carry more organic and native plants.

On June 21, 2010, I received a renewal mailing for my driver's license, from the California Department of Motor Vehicles, "DMV". The enclosed letter told me that I could renew online. I thought that this was a very good option.
However, the renewal mailing itself was quite unnecessary and environmentally unsound; if DMV were compelled by statute to mail, it should have sent a postcard on recycled, biodegradable paper, with references to online services and the option to receive a mailing printed on the card in soy ink. Money and trees would have been saved. I ask DMV to count me as a supporter if it needs legislation to make such a move. Also, I ask that DMV ask for e-mail addresses so as to facilitate a transition away from paper. Every DMV office, including headquarters, should have an assistant manager for green practices, who would continually look for every possible way to green the office and the transactions with the public. Thank you.

This is the second message to Caremore, which provides health care for my parents. Today, June 21, two mailings came to the house, one for my father and the other for my mother. Each was an "EOB", "Explanation of Benefits". Caremore's attention to paperwork is commendable, but the paperwork is quite excessive and is going to lead to a major problem for Caremore. Not only is so much paper environmentally unsound, but, also, it is costly. The information in the two mailings today could have been transmitted to me via e-mail. To think that my eighty-seven year-old father with advanced macular degeneration and my eighty year-old mother would benefit from the mailings would be wishful thinking. // Caremore should use biodegrable, recycleable paper with soy ink at all times. The company should not hesitate to have fruit trees planted, not only for the oxygen generated and the carbon sequestered, but, also, because the harvesting and consumption of the fruit could be incorporated into Caremore's wise preventive program. Imagine a health-care company which invites its members to enjoy themselves by picking and eating fruit. // Every Caremore office should have an assistant manager for green practices, somebody who at all times would look for every way possible for the company to be green and who would take the lead in making Caremore a stellar example to American private sector. This is my second message to this foundation. Today, June 21, 2010, two mailings came to the house, one to my father and one to me. Each of us received the same mailing, a large newsletter. I repeat what was stated in the first message, namely, that the foundation needs to be more environmentally sensitive. Being sensitive would save money which then could be used for recycled paper which would be biodegradable and on which the text would be printed with soy ink. The foundation is in a position to set a much needed example for other nonprofit organizations and should not hesitate to do so. Thank you.

My sister and I went to Starbucks. She asked for 2 pastries, the cashier didn't ask whether we were eating in or wanted the same bag, she automatically bagged them separately. What a waste. please consider training your staff not to be so wasteful - may seem little but given the number of customers you have I bet it makes a huge difference.

Woohoo! Costco is recycling and composting now! I first wrote a review on Consumer Change lamenting the waste situation at the sampling stations.

I was impressed by Costco's detailed response on my post -- it further reinforced the positive feeling I had about Costco after learning about how well they treat their workers compared to Walmart.
A month ago, I went to Costco and saw that they had placed recycling and composting bins at the tasting stations, and yesterday, I notice, there are even more bins around the warehouse for when you need to dispose of the sampling cups, liners, etc, as you walk around shopping. I am SO SO SO PLEASED I started sampling more again, and even ended up buying the new V8 juices they were offering as samples. Previous to this change, I wouldn't have sampled the product because it would have entailed throwing away paper cups into landfill, but at least now it is composted. It makes for a much more pleasant shopping experience.
Oh, and recently I found organic basil plants there. Yay! I was definitely surprised it was organic, but now I am going to keep looking at their plant offerings in case any other organic herbs or veges show up!
Kudos, Costco. Looking forward to seeing more green practices at your stores and feeling good frequenting Costco.

Another unsolicited mailing came from American Express. Again, no mention of recycled paper, biodegradability, soy ink or the planting of trees. I strongly urge American Express to have a "Green-Practices Advocate" to talk up and compel green practices before any more unsolicited mailings. The alternative is to ignore e-mail like this until a big faux pas result in expensive damage control. Thank you.

I received an e-mail today. I applaud the Southern California Gas Company for offering to make a donation if I go paperless with regard to billing:
"The Gas Company(SM) has teamed up with the California State Parks Foundation to help protect California's magnificent state parks. The Gas Company will donate $5* to the California State Parks Foundation for every customer who goes paperless for this campaign. Paperless online billing is environmentally friendly, secure and a convenient way to receive and pay your bill. ... " // The Gas Company would have done better if this had been a school fundraiser: $5 for every switch to paperless by a family. Why not plan such a fundraiser now and announce in September? // What about people who do not use the Internet or online bill payment? How do we persuade them to go paperless? This could be tied to a school fundraiser. Somebody in the family would be designated to receive the online bill and notify the person. Even better, two family members would receive the online bill, which means that the gas company would have to modify the registration form a bit. // How about online bill payment? To protect the person, a bank can set up a payment account with an agreed-upon amount automatically transferred monthly into that account, in anticipation of coming payments. The payment-account data would be given to the gas company and other entities doing billing online. The harm from any breach of security would be minimal, because a relatively small amount would be in the account at any one time and only certain entities would be authorized to draw from it. // The gas company has a good idea which could become a great idea which others would emulate. Just a little thought and effort, well within the company's ability. Thank you.

I was surprised when my leftovers came in a polystyrene box. Polystyrene is a known neuro-toxin and is banned as food container in over 30 cities including San Francisco, Berkeley and Palo Alto. Please consider switching to a more enviromentally friendly container going forward.

US Bank has replied to recent e-mail, for which I thank the bank. Unfortunately, the problems persist and I cannot understand how a large bank with all its resources can be so very distant from conservation and sustainability. It is no excuse to say that conservation and sustainability have been lost in the transition planning. One does not have to have an MBA with a minor in environmental studies to understand what the salient themes of the day are. // The several unnecessary mailings to date add up to quite an expense, which means that if I were a shareholder, I would be furious over the lost profit. // On May 29, 2010, I received a mailed statement from US Bank about my checking account, transferred from California National Bank, which US Bank had bought. Apart from the absence of any indication of recycled paper, biodegradability, soy ink or the planting of trees, two disheartening facts accompanied the mailing: (1) California National Bank had mailed a similar statement in May and (2) I had begun using US Bank's online banking, making a mailed statement unnecessary. // I do not know what more could be said. Somebody at the bank has to become the proactive green advocate, with sufficient authorization and enthusiasm to nip these unconscionable problems before they become a public-relations liability for the bank. Freecycle is a fabulous organization that makes it easy to pass on useful items to people in your area (or to request items if you're looking for something yourself). I've been able to pass on plywood, grass seed, fertilizer, and spare cleaning supplies -- all products that thrift stores won't take -- that were just sitting the house unused. It's a great way to extend the life of items and contribute to your community at the same time. Highly recommended!

The Macula Vision Research Foundation does a seminar each year in Los Angeles. We received an announcement in the mail today. There was no indication of recycled paper, biodegradability, soy ink or planting trees. // It is understandable why the foundation would do a mailing and would use large type, as many of the recipients would have impaired vision and would not be computer savvy. Yes, one cannot give those as reasons not to be environmentally sensitive. // Two possible solutions:
(a) have a more environmentally-responsive database:
* send e-mail whenever possible,
* avoid more than one mailing to an address,
* find a way to reduce the needed information so that it fit on the back of a postcard.

I remember that, back in the Seventies, I thought that the LOS ANGELES TIMES ranked with the NEW YORK TIMES in quality. But the times they are achangin'. The LOS ANGELES TIMES, like many newspapers, has competition from online news media. // I received a subscription solicitation from the TIMES today. No mention of recycled paper, biodegradability, soy ink or planting trees. The TIMES must become aware that extremely wasteful twentieth-century marketing is unacceptable in the twenty-first century. // Instead of spending so much money on unsolicited mailings, the TIMES might do better to invest that money in the next gizmo from a Stanford whiz kid, which means that the TIMES should have a presence on that campus.

It is now twelve days later since the post about the mail solicitation from American Express. I have received another mailing from Amex. Same problem, perhaps worse, because, for me to get a second mailing tells me that the Amex promotion is not going as well as the company would like, meaning that a considerable amount of paper has been wasted employing a twentieth-century type of marketing. // Amex has suggestions from the previous post. The question is whether it would see itself as a genuine corporate citizen.

This organization mailed a donation solicitation which, neither on envelope or letter, said anything about recycled paper, biodegradability, soy ink or planting trees. To its credit, the organization did not pain us with address labels and was frugal in the use of paper in its mailing; however, these did not make up for the "twentieth century" mailing. // What might work well is if the organization planted trees with every donation, which would serve two purposes: honoring the fallen and improving the environment. Also, it would be good if the organization appointed an "assistant manager for green practices", to ensure that every activity be good for the Earth and good for America.

We received a mailer at the house today from the "Yes on 17" committee in California. I saw the symbol indicating that the mailer was printed in a union shop, but there was no indication of recycled paper, biodegradability, soy ink or planting trees. We as individuals and organizations in America tend to be unidimensional, that is, we focus on one issue as if it were not connected to anything else. Just as insurance rates, the subject of Proposition 17, affect everyone, so does the use of paper and ink to send out a "Yes on 17" mailer. This is not the twentieth century, when we thought that we had the luxury to be wasteful because we thought that the planet had the capacity to absorb our waste.

A booklet containing pros and cons on the propositions for the coming June California election was mailed to the house by the League of Women Voters. The League must be applauded for attempting to educate California voters, more so in light of deceptive campaign advertising. // As for the environmental friendliness of the mailing, there was no indication of that other than, perhaps, that the booklet had been printed on newspaper stock. There was no indication of recycled paper, biodegradability, soy ink or planting trees. Also, I was surprised that there was no reference in large print to the League's "Smart Voter" Web site. // The League would benefit from having an innovations officer, somebody with a mandate to test ideas with local Leagues, in order to both increase voter knowledge and environmental friendliness. (Why an innovations officer? Recently, Common Cause instituted a program by which a donor would not donate until a candidate pledged to abide by certain rules. A variation of that had been put to the League a few years ago, but the program has not been implemented.)

The communal breakfast kitchen uses all styrofoam products. I would suggest switching to paper, and if composting is available in the area, I would suggest offering compostable products. Even better would be to offer ceramic, reusable items.
The flow rate of the shower was very high. I would suggest replacing the shower heads with high performance, low-flow shower heads. Aerators could also be inserted into the sink faucets, as well.

A nicely-done political mailer came to the house today from "Californians Vote Green". There was a reference to the Forest Stewardship Council in type so small that it BARELY could be read WITH A MAGNIFYING GLASS. There was no indication that recycled paper had been used, that the mailer was biodegradable, that soy ink had been used. There was no mention of planting trees or offsetting carbon emission. Californians Vote Green could have done much better. Seeing that Proposition 16 was highlighted, my thought was that this mailer was really by proponents of Proposition 16. The mailer's lack of environmental care might make a person want to vote against Proposition 16.

A charity which which I work and whose mail I open received an unsolicited mailing from Verizon. I was pleased to see a statement on the envelope, "Our printing supports wind power", with a reference to www.renewablechoice.com. The enclosed literature had the statement "Please Recycle" with the recycle symbol. // It is laudable that Verizon buys carbon offsets which fund wind power, but I do not see how that reduces the number of trees cut down. Also, there is nothing said about recycled paper, biodegradability, soy ink or planting trees. Those are directly related to Verizon's mailing and I ask that Verizon directly address those. // Also, Verizon could stand out as an industry leader if it announced that it had appointed an "assistant manager for green practices" for every one of its offices, who could green all activities, from keeping things bright with sunlight to dispensing with disposables. I received a mail solicitation from American Express for its "Premier Awards Gold Card". There was no mention on the envelope or contents of recycled paper, biodegradability, soy ink or planting trees. American Express is a major company; its action will lead to action by others. I encourage American Express (a) to use e-mail instead of mail, (b) to set an example of environmental leadership whenever a mailing be necessary, and (c) to appoint in every office a person to be the "assistant manager for green practices", whose job would be to look at every action and find ways to conserve. My mother received a survey in the mail from the Democratic National Committee. I was pleased that the image for recycled paper appeared on the envelope and on the enclosed letter and survey. At the same time, there was no indication of biodegradability, soy ink or the planting of trees. As for the recycle image, I urge the committee to display it more prominently. // Two additional suggestions: (a) use online surveying as much as possible so that paper be avoided completely and (b) appoint and draw attention to a "vice chair for green practices", whose job would be to continually look for ways to green the DNC and its communications, then tell the public about it. An additional thought for (a): it would be interesting to see how many youth and young adults would survey their parents and grandparents online if the DNC asked their help to do an environmentally-friendly survey. // Thank you.

Deluxe for Business is a large national company with a proud history. Today I received two mailings from the Deluxe office in Lancaster, California. While each mailing was for a different service, the two could have been combined to save paper and money. I looked on the envelopes and the literature, but was unable to find any mention of recycled paper, biodegradability, soy ink or planting trees to offset the trees used to make these mailings. // Deluxe helps communities in the areas of education, the arts and human services. Deluxe can be a leader with regard to health and the environment by setting an example for the public and other businesses. Alongside doing eco-friendly mailings, Deluxe might get mention in the WALL STREET JOURNAL by appointing staff to become "assistant managers for green practices", so that somebody in every office be focused on greening every business routine possible. There is a vigorous campaign in California in favor of Proposition 16, to be voted by the public on the June ballot. An 8.5" x 11" mailer came to the house today, printed in color on each side on card stock. There was no mention of recycled paper, biodegradability, soy ink or planting trees to offset the consumption of trees. // We have a tendency to compartmentalize our lives: we attempt to shine as heroes in one aspect of our lives and fail in others. I ask the "Yes on 16" people to do better, because they can do better, as they have the funds to do so.

I received an unsolicited mailing from Wayne Direct Insurance Services for life insurance. There was nothing in the mailing about recycled paper, biodegradability, soy ink or planting trees. // Buying an address list from the California State Bar and then doing a random solicitation belongs to the twentieth century, not the present day. // There are three things which Wayne Direct can do: (1) buy only lists in which the intended recipients' environmental preferences are stated; (2) use paper which is recyled, biodegradable, printed with soy ink and in exchange for which trees have been planted, all of this stated on the paper; (3) appoint for the office an "assistant manager for green practices" who takes to heart her / his responsibilities.

My parents, both retired, switched in April to CareMore, a health insurer, which provides better coverage for their needs than does Blue Shield. CareMore has incorporated certain efficiencies to cut its costs, but, quite surprisingly, not in its communications with members. // The sales agent gave my parents sizable directories when they signed up. CareMore itself mailed each of my parents sizable directories. Considerable waste in paper and mailing, and no indication of recycled paper, biodegradability, soy ink or planting trees. // Unfortunately, this inefficiency continues. CareMore can e-mail us and doctors when an authorization is given for a doctor visit, but chooses to mail notices, which, with the envelope and postage, might cost fifty cents more than the labor needed for e-mail. With millions of authorizations going out to members, that fifty cents become a large number. Again, no indication of recycled paper, biodegradability, soy ink or planting trees. Also, there has been a duplicate authorization, issued by the primary-care physician and the CareMore office. I hope that CareMore immediately institute changes, as it has a computer network with which to track communications with members. // It would be a fine example if CareMore (1) appointed a person in each of its offices and each of its care facilities to be an "assistant manager for green practices", (2) announced this during the summer, and (3) deservedly boasted next Earth Day about the savings.

Boys and Girls Clubs, like many other nonprofits, has struggled because of the recession. During the last week of April, the Boys and Girls Clubs Los Angeles County Alliance mailed us a donation solicitation. There was no mention of recycled paper, biodegradability, soy ink or planting trees. Unfortunately, the solicitation included address labels, which we added to the five hundred other address labels from Veterans of Foreign Wars and Paralyzed Veterans of America.
It would help all Boys and Girls Clubs, as part of its programs, to have youth become "assistant managers for green practices" at BGC facilities, with the expectation that there would be some savings mixed with education from green living. Also, it would help if Boys and Girls Clubs added a program for families about green living, thereby attracting support from the environment crowd. It might get some headlines if youth planted trees to replace those used for BGC mailings and found alternatives to bottled water and paper plates--such alternatives exist.

Typically, an organization does not innovate, but, rather, falls back on traditional fundraising, as the Boys and Girls Clubs Los Angeles County Alliance did the last week of April with a mailed donation solicitation to our house.

On April 16, a message went to US Bank about greening its communications with customers. US Bank is big; unnecessarily sending two mailings in the place of one results in a huge waste, more so because there is no mention of recycled paper, biodegradability, soy ink or planting trees.
With regard to waste, lightning struck twice, unfortunately. About a week later, a mailing came from US Bank, saying that a Visa card from the old bank was to be replaced by a US Bank Visa card. Then, on April 26, a letter came giving deadlines as to when to redeem points from the old Visa card. Certainly these two mailings could have been combined. Again, there was no mention of recycled paper, biodegradability, soy ink or planting trees. Interestingly, the envelope of the April 26 mailing had "recycle" printed on the back in a corner, but that is not the same as "printed on 100% recycled paper".
US Bank, as a for-profit company, can do much better. Internal coordination should be possible through its computer network. US Bank could and should immediately become a leader; it is time to have a corporate huddle and get a memo out to everyone. And every office, every bank branch, should have an assistant manager for green practices who is obsessive about turning the office or branch into a green showcase, even inviting people to an open house next Earth Day.

This follows the message to VFW dated April 23, about the organization's donation solicitation to my father. Just a week later, on April 30, the organization sent another mailing. More note pads, more address labels. This time there were birthday and sympathy cards, a pen, and some ribbon included.
The additions make for a good change, but, nevertheless, everything in the mailing is wasteful. No indication of recycling, biodegradability, soy ink or planting trees. And could VFW fundraise, saving trees and expense, by arranging for the public to send e-cards?
It would be wise for VFW to address these quickly, as "business as usual" is weakening America. Certainly, VFW does not want to be seen as uncaring about the legacy which we leave to coming generations.

My father receives donation solicitations from Paralyzed Veterans of America. Typically, there is a small gift. This time there was a note pad. Veterans of Foreign Wars, also, sends note pads. Our family has more than enough note pads.
"The times they are achangin'" The contents of the solicitation should be biodegradable and / or recyclable, and a conspicuous statement should state as much. There should be a large, proud statement that soy ink was used.
If PVA looks for home-income opportunities for paralyzed people, there might be an opportunity associated with producing items to remind people to go green. These items could be produced with desktop computers and printers. The charities with which I work would assist in the development of such an opportunity.
PVA, like VFW, must make a quick and substantive change in its solicitations. "Business as usual" is hurting America.

I actually bought one of their reusable cups. Unfortunately, every time I tried to request they use it, it didn't work. Their assembly line style of makes it an impossible request. I would request it at the register, but there's no "reusable cup" option on their computer system. I would try to hand the cup to the smoothie assemblers, but since there are three of them, I would never know when my smoothie would be up, and my smoothie would get dumped in a cup before I could protest. It was useless.

I agree, but you can buy reusable plastic insulated cups from Jamba Juice (or bring your own). In fact most stores give you a discount on each subsequent purchase using a reusable cup. My father is a retiree of the "UAW", United Automobile, Aerospace and Agricultural Implement Workers of America. He periodically receives mailings from the union.
I am so happy that the UAW REGION 5 REPORT, which is a newspaper mailed to my father, is printed with soy-based ink on recycled paper. At the same time, my father received a letter dated April 14, 2010, because a union representative's name was left out of the newspaper.
I ask the UAW to implement two things as quickly as possible:
(1) proudly display the eco-friendliness of the newspaper on the front page of every issue and, without hesitation, ask readers the question, "Can you help by telling advertisers and other newspapers that you want them to be green, because green is good for America?" Go so far as to invite readers to report on success in getting others to go green;
(2) make a new policy of which all nonprofits and government would be made aware through the news media, namely, that every shop have a green assistant to the shop steward and every office have a "green practices" adviser; with such a person, we would have avoided the mailing mentioned above, perhaps substituting a postcard on recycled paper, which would have saved UAW money.

My father donates to Veterans of Foreign Wars, "VFW", which mails address labels and note pads to donors. However, my father now has five hundred labels, and that pile keeps increasing as VFW continues to mail labels. (Remember Lucille Ball and conveyor belt with nonstop chocolates?)
1. There is NO indication that VFW (a) recycles, (b) reuses, (c) uses biodegradable material or (d) plants saplings in order to offset the trees lost to its mailings.
There is a deplorably huge waste.
2. Going green could turn into an opportunity for VFW and the veterans whom it serves:
(a) what useful, ecologically-friendly item could VFW insert as it solicits donations via mailings? My charities would help VFW find a substitute for address labels;
(b) could veterans participate in the production of that item?
(c) could veterans be paid to plant trees or even to grow substances which substitute for paper from trees, as there is quite a variety of substitutes for tree-based paper, like plant starch mixed with water-soluble adhesive?

We stayed at the Embassy Suites in Crystal City for 7 nights with our family. Loved the full breakfasts and bowl of fruit in the reception area (encouraging more fresh fruit is great), but we have a few suggestions on environmental stewardship.
First, although there was a sign that said that if we hung our towels up they would not be washed, it appeared that all towels were replaced daily. In fact, we left our "do not disturb" sign up two full days just to ensure that the towels and sheets were not washed.
Secondly, we saw way too many people taking styrofoam cups for coffee or juice in the morning instead of using the ceramic mugs and glasses. You could make them less available and have a sign up about using the washable mugs; and you could switch to a less polluting form of cup for people who want to take their coffee with them. And I would encourage you to find other ways to reduce trash and overall consumption in the breakfast room. It pains me to think of all the waste multiplied by hundreds of hotels in thousands of cities across the country. At least you use ceramic plates and bowls; many hotels use all paper and plastic!
Another suggestion is to have recycling containers in each room for newspapers, other recyclables.

Recently, US Bank bought out California National Bank. Our families' two accounts transferred to US Bank.
1. US Bank welcomed us with two identical mailings to the same address--much paper which we would NOT read. (Side note. The California Secretary of State, when sending information on ballot propositions, sends ONE book to a household, regardless of the number of voters in the household.)
2. In all that paper, I was hoping to see mention of "100% recycled material" or, even better, "We planted a hundred saplings for every tree used to send this mailing". No such statement, unfortunately.
3. US Bank could have sent us a postcard, telling us that we could find the same information online or we could order by mail. This would have been a HUGE saving in paper and money.
4. If US Bank is constricted by law to send us a mailing, then it should remonstrate with the government. MANY account holders, including yours truly, would gladly sign a petition and defend US Bank if it refused to comply with any wasteful requirement.
I am hoping that US Bank immediately set a salient example by implementing the above. I am ready to assist with #4.

I am not a regular Wal-Mart customer (there isnt one near me) but had heard a lot about WalMart's work towards being sustainable and even invested in some shares to support the cause.
I got a chance to go to WalMart when on vacation, to buy some bread and none of the choices were organic. How is it that a company like WalMart who has made such a huge amount of noise regarding going green cannot do something simple to support the environment like stock organic bread?

I just got back from a week's stay at wyndham in Kona. I noted a lot of improvements over my prior Wyndham stays (in other locations):
- the resort had a sheet about being green in each guest's room (re need to switch off lights, etc.),
- the dishwashing powder was eco-friendly,
- the resort also recycles bottles (Or at least they said they did)
- they had an owners pot luck at the end of the week so you could use your excess food
It would be nice if they also recycled paper. There is a paper recycling facility on the Big Island of Hawaii. The front desk told me I could go there and give them my paper to recycle; it is a shame that Wyndham doesnt facilitate that for guests.

A couple of issues:
1) I asked why the location did not have the iTunes cards. The response was "we are a green location, so we don't waste paper."
2) This location has a large eat-in space and "crowd". The last time I was in every single person was using a disposable cup. I actually asked for a ceramic cup and was told "sorry, we already started using the paper cup. Would you like us to pour your coffee into a ceramic cup and throw the paper away?." It would have been hilarious if it wasn't so dumb.
Just think that you guys can do so much better. You have all the tools and don;t seem to use them.

I was at Stitches West 2010 on Friday, February 26th. There were trash bins scattered throughout the eating area, but one was so full it was overflowing. The others weren't yet full, but getting there. I noticed the full one had empty food containers and soda cans. Not only was it a mess because the most used trash can was full and overflowing, but it didn't look like cans were going to be recycled since the only visible cans were on top. I did not see a separate receptacle for recycling. If there was and I missed it, that is almost as bad as not having it since I was not the only one missed it.

My AMEX account was enrolled in Travel Delay and Baggage Protection. In order to upgrade to Travel Assure, which also covers flight and trip cancellation, I was told I need to cancel the first two enrollment -- which I did.
Today, I received 3 separate mailings from AMEX, confirming that:
a) I canceled Travel Delay coverage (1-page)
b) I canceled Travel Delay coverage (1-page)
c) I enrolled in Travel Assure coverage (11-pages double sided)
All mailings were sent out on the same day. Could they have done just 1 mailing?
Plus, I am enrolled in electronic bill -- couldn't they have sent it out electronically?

I got a TurboTax Free Basic CD in the mail. The CD packaging was more than twice the size of the CD.
I wont be using the CD and I am sure there are thousands of people who got the same thing and wont be using it either. This is a huge waste of plastic (CD) and paper (packaging).
Wouldnt a postcard with an download code or an email blast been better for the environment and cheaper for you?

When I pay my copayment I'm given two 8.5 x 11 sheets of paper for a receipt. The text barely takes up a fourth of the page so a much smaller paper size could be used. Also there's no need to provide two receipts with the same information; if I want a second copy I'll make one myself.

I was disappointed to see that Safeway's 100% Pure Cotton Balls (200 Count) come in a non-recyclable plastic bag. Why aren't you using recyclable bags for this product? We do a significant amount of shopping for household items at Safeway, but that will change if you continue to use non-recyclable packaging.

Thank you for your interest in Starbucks recycling efforts. We share your interest in preserving the planet for future generations and we are committed to significantly reducing the waste our stores generate - especially when it comes to recycling. In fact, we have set a goal of having recycling available in 100 percent of our stores where we control waste pick-up by 2015. This is actually a very complex issue that we have been trying to address for many years and we are committed to doing the work it takes to make recycling available to our customers.
As you may know, recycling is dependent on the availability of commercial recycling services where our stores are located. Our ability to place recycling bins in all of our stores is also dependent on city or county governments, who either manage this service directly or contract it out to private haulers. These local authorities can provide subsidies and sometimes mandate whether or not the haulers have to collect paper, glass, plastics or compostable waste.
For commercial recycling (such as at a Starbucks store), the items that get collected are almost always driven by the open market. This means that if the haulers can get a good price for recyclable materials (cardboard, glass, plastic, food-contaminated paper products), they'll collect it from local businesses. But if they can't get a good price - or when there's not a critical mass of materials to collect - they may not collect them because there's no financial benefit for them. Another significant challenge is the fact that half of our stores are located in leased spaces where we don't control waste collection and recycling. Our landlords often determine whether tenants can recycle based on space availability and commercial recycling services.
Regardless of these hurdles, Starbucks is committed to finding innovative solutions that will provide recycling in all stores where we control waste collection by 2015. Last year, 70 percent of our stores recycled at least one type of waste where commercial recycling is available - but it's often happening behind the counter, out of sight to customers.
In 2009, we are testing front-of-house recycling in several markets. We also have recycling programs in our other facilities, including Starbucks Support Center - our global headquarters in Seattle, and our roasting plants in Kent, Washington; York, Pennsylvania; and Carson Valley, Nevada.

Recently we bought a V8 100% Vegetable Juice Weekly Pack. Unfortunately, once we got home, we discovered that the plastic wrap holding the cans together was not recyclable. Even worse, the plastic could have easily been replaced by something more environmentally friendly like thin recycled cardboard. Dole's small pineapple juice cans are almost identical to your small V8 cans, and they use thin cardboard quite effectively to hold their cans together. Please let us know what steps you are taking to make your V8 packaging more environmentally friendly.

Kudos to Marshalls for giving out free reusable logo'd shopping bags to customers at their Almaden San Jose store some months back. However Marshalls needs to instruct employees, and remind them repeatedly, to ask customers if they want to reuse their plastic bags when they do an exchange.

When taking food to go, Panda Express employees always put several packets of soy sauce and chili sauce in the bags with the food. Most of these go to waste and I now rush to tell the cashier not to put any in for me. It would be less wasteful for the cashiers to ask customers whether they would like sauce before putting several packets in the bags.
Also, Panda Express still uses styrofoam packaging for their two-item combos. Styrofoam is harmful to the environment and it would be better if they used another type of packaging.

I want to thank the Bernardus Lodge for doing a great job promoting environmentally responsible practices. Besides the somewhat common practice of encouraging guests to use sheets and towels more than once to save water, there was a recycling can in both the room and the gym, and compostable water cups at the spa. I got a postal-solicitation from The Wilderness Society the other day, which is fine (I've signed TWS petitions in the past), but I was very disappointed to see that you used a separate envelope to hold the self-contained "citizen petition packet". The packet was in its own sealed envelope, and putting that in yet another envelope was simply a waste of paper. I hope The Wilderness Society will look more closely at it's own environmental practices before sending out any similar mailings.

sometimes you send blank check books as a promotion to existing credit card holders to take some money from their credit card accounts. These books are wasteful, surely there is a more environmentally friendly way of offering this service? Maybe reduce the number of blank checks to 1 or 2? You must have some market data on how many blank checks most people use? Issuing any more than that is wasteful.

I bought some HP printer cartridges that were about 2.5" x 2". Yet the packaging was 5.5" x 4". Not all of the packaging was used for product description - much of it was blank.
Why dont you think the environment and use less packaging - this would save you money too.

I ordered a coleslaw at KFC to eat in and it came in a polystyrene bowl.
Polystyrene is made out of toxic chemicals and many cities have banned the use of polystyrene food containers. Also why are you using disposable bowls when I am eating in, adding the our waste and landfill issues.
Could you consider a more environmental way of doing things?

As I check my mail each day I can count on receiving what seems to be my daily mailing from American Express. I have been a loyal AMEX customer for most of my adult life, therefore, I must be on every mailer they ever generate. While some of the announcements they send are good to know about, they could easily do this in an email mailing rather than in paper form. Their post cards are over-sized, they constantly send letters trying to get me to pay my bill over time rather than all at once and letters trying to get me to upgrade my account. They send vacation package announcements that even look like a gift package in the mail. While their packaging is fancy and make you think you are “specialâ€, they are so extremely wasteful in every way. Every week my recycle bin is filled with my daily AMEX mailings. The most extreme item I received was a vacation announcement. It was actually presented in an extremely thick and fancy cardboard folder, which looked more like a gift box, and when you opened it, it only had a small little paper announcement inside offering a vacation deal. Additionally, the whole mailing was delivered in extremely thick envelope. I could not believe the amount of postage and paper that was wasted in delivering this small announcement. I urge them to stop contributing to the destruction of trees and wasting corporate funds and start sending their marketing materials online. They have a chance to help the environment, increase the value to their stockholders which could ultimately contribute to the economic recovery. Thank you.

I am a big fan of Wyndham Resorts but I am getting increasingly concerned about your lack of good environmental practices. Here are some issues that I see, most are easy fixes:
1) Provide recycling facilities for guests. This is easy. People do it at home, a lot of hotels do it, offices do it. Why doesnt Wyndham Resorts do it?
2) Only remodel when you need to. I dont understand why Daytona Beach is being remodelled when the building is only 5 years old and in good repair. Same thing when we stayed in GasLamp District last year. No-one wants to stay in an old crumbling place but these resorts were far from it. Remodelling only when needed would save your owners money as well as be more environmentally friendly.
3) As most resorts have kitchens, get a local food bank to collect leftovers. I am a careful shopper and I overshopped for this last trip. I am sure many others do the same. Allowing guests to donate unopened leftovers makes you look good, reduces waste and helps people less fortunate.

At Wyndham Worldwide we have instituted the WyndhamGreen program in which we focus on conservation of resources, recycling, education and training. Your recommendations hit on several areas in which we are working on solutions that we hope to implement. We have begun to test and develop affordable recycling programs. It takes time to insure that we do in fact recycle all of the products. In terms of remodeling, we work with our properties to insure that they meet guest needs and industry standards. We remodel only when necessary. We have also been developing green remodeling solutions such as green paints and carpets which are being used by some of our properties as they remodel. Regarding left over food, we do allow our properties to donate food as long as it meets local standards and some of them even take leftover food and turn it into biofuel. We recently bought Arrowhead Mills' Organic Puffed Kamut cereal, and I was disappointed to learn that you use non-recyclable bags. As a result, those bags will go directly to the landfill, where they will join several 100 billion other non-recyclable plastic bags, sacks and wraps each year. And that's just in the U.S. We cannot continue to waste resources and generate trash this way, and I'd like to know when you will be switching to recyclable plastic bags for your products. I was disappointed to see that the Thomas' BetterStart muffins we bought were packaged in a non-recyclable plastic bag. Making sure that packaging is either recyclable or compostable/degradable is critical for the environment, and an important part of our purchasing decision. There are many other english muffin brands available, and from now on we'll be looking for companies that use recyclable plastic bags. I hope Bimbo Bakeries USA will consider modernizing it's environmental practices so that we can buy your products in the future.

Each time I visit this dealership to service my car, I cringe at how much wastes go into the landfill, to fix my car. For example, paper is used to line the driver side floor, and a plastic sheet is used to line the drive side seat. The nice technicians put these straight into the big trash cans. No separation of trash whatsoever. I also notice that when they replace a part, all its packaging, and the old part, goes right into the big trash can. It makes this customer feel very uncomfortable. They are making me complicit in adding, what must have been at least couple cubic feet of waste into the landfill!

One of the guilty pleasures that Costco provides its customers is the variety of sampling stations. Pleasure because it is fun to taste new products. Guilty because it uses many disposable containers. I notice at the recent change that they have made the effort to swap out mini plastic cups (e.g. for holding a single gummy bear vitamins) for paper cake liner. Definitely seems a lot less wasteful. However, many other stations still use single-use foam cups, plastic cups, etc. for each tasting. When my husband and I both wanted to sample an item, they refused to put a second item into an existing container, even after I ate the content. I've asked many times, but different stations all cite "that's the rule". Also, these containers simply go into trash cans and don't get recycled. I CRINGE everytime I visit Costco now, after noticing how many thousands of containers get added to the trash every day there. I even reduced my sampling which makes me sad because I'd in the past bought new items because of it. While I applaud how well Costco treats its employees (and it shows in the customer experience as compared to being in Walmart) -- I am aghast at the lack of eco-responsibility corporate policy in this area. Please please consider ways to reduce your waste. Let us reuse containers. Recycle or compost the waste. Use visible recycling / composting bins. Find alternate containers with lower carbon and waste footprint.

The demo companies which provide the product demonstrations inside Costco, as well as Costco Wholesale itself, greatly appreciate the concerns you have raised. We understand the need to recycle and to reuse, and to reduce the carbon footprint from the events we provide for Costco members to enjoy.
In many instances, local law dictates how we serve samples. They insist that we serve individual samples in a manner that only that member touches the offering. Oftentimes, they further require that the serving item we use be a one-sample, one-use item. We do our best to not only meet, but exceed, local health code requirements in order to maximize our efforts to protect the health and safety of all members. For that reason, we have made it policy to follow this one-sample, one-use practice throughout all the warehouses. Admittedly, this does increase the amount of trash generated. In these days of H1N1 and other communicable diseases, we error on the side of reducing risk to our members' health and safety.
At the same time, we are working to find better, more ecologically-friendly ways to conduct our business. Your posting mentions that we are using paper baking cups on many demos and individual baking sheets for multiple samples (no samples touch another) on others. We also utilize toothpicks whenever possible since they are from a renewable resource, create less waste volume and break down easier than other items. Our goal is to use the least ecologically-invasive serving item that still presents the item in an appetizing and safe way. We will diligently continue in our efforts to find more ecologically-friendly ways to serve Costco members.
We are also working with the warehouses to recycle much of the packaging from the products we sample. This has been, and will be, a growing focus for us. In addition, Costco and we are testing more extensive separation of recyclable and compostable trash in several warehouses. We hope our efforts result in long-term solutions that can be duplicated in all Costco locations.

Costco -- thanks for your response -- which reaffirms that I like to do business with you guys. I understand that you operate under local law and regulation, but there is another more sustainable approach that the farmer's market in Mountain View has found to follow the same regulation of one-sample, one-use that your Mt View Costco is also subject to. Their approach is to provide tongs that users must use pick up fruit wedges. I believe that your use of single-use cups is to avoid members soiling their hands, but we don't seem to mind when shopping at the farmer's market. Perhaps you can take a look at their best practices and see whether there is any further waste volume reduction possible.
Also, I'd suggest you provide more reduce, reuse, recycle information of your warehouse operation -- both front-end and back-end operations in your store to alleviate concerns members like me may have.

The best solution I can think of (besides allowing cup re-use, which may run afoul of health & safety standards) is to encourage them to use paper cups, small paper napkins, wax paper (or cake liner, as you suggested), or something similar. I got my holiday cards from Sears Portrait studios, in addition to my 15 inch receipt (of which only 7 inches pertains to my transaction), I received 2 pieces of 9 inch long paper with offers printed. Ie a total of 33 inches of receipt paper of which only 7 inches was relevant/useful. I understand receipt paper is not recyclable.
I am very disappointed in your attention to the environment - you have some great web pages dedicated to the environment but with this kind of waste I believe you are just greenwashing.
I have complained about this before and I intend to stop shopping at Sears until you change your policy.

Trader Joe's markets do a number of things right environmentally -- in particular they promote reusable shopping bags and they sell a lot of organic products. However, they're bad about using recyclable plastic bags to hold many of their store-branded products. The following Trader Joe's products in my home all came in non-recyclable plastic bags:
* Bagel Josef's Pumpkin Spice bagels (organic wheat flour)
* Trader Joe's Extra Sour Sourdough English Muffins
* Trader Joe's Honey Plantain Strips
Come on Trader Joe's, if you have to use plastic bags, make sure they're recyclable.

I bought a 4 oz box of Skittles at the movies. Look how big the cardboard box was compared to the inside. I am not complaining about the amount of sweets, but about the number of trees that could be saved if you made the box more size appropriate. It may just be an inch or so of cardboard less for each box but it will add up quickly when you think of how many skittles in boxes are sold each day.

Home Depot has a wonderful return and exchange policy, even if you can't find your receipt or they can't find the order on your credit card. In this case, a card containing store credit is given. Unfortunately, because I tend to make multiple trips to Home Depot for return (since that's the nature of home improvement), I get a separate store credit "card" each time. I've asked the cashier to add on the value to the existing cards but they can't do that. Why is it? Should be an easy enough software change to reuse this card and reduce plastic waste.

I have been a loyal customer of Macy's for as long as I can remember. Only recently have I been moved to consider shopping at a more eco-friendly department store. It has become increasingly hard to tolerate the amount of paperwaste I recieve in the form of advertising and coupons. While I understand this has worked for Macy's for years to drive in customers and grow profits, it is time for Macy's to become stewards of the environment and lead the way in using "green" alternatives in advertising. There are many new eco friendly ways to advertise and drive in customers. Please have your troops bring you and the decision makers on this issue of wasteful marketing all the information to make an informed environmentally sound decision to change. I honestly throw away almost all of the catalogs and coupons....such a waste of paper! I would much rather get my coupons via email or text message than destroy so many trees.

Thank you for your email about sustainability at Macy's, Inc., and particularly about the amount of paper we use. I think you will be impressed with the amount of progress we have made in this area. Macy's is committed to reducing paper use and increasing the percentage of recycled/third party certified paper use. Over the past two years, Macy's has decreased the use of office/copy paper by 34 percent and paper used in marketing by 23 percent. We have increased to 63 percent the proportion of recycled or certified paper used in our marketing materials and to 82 percent in our shopping bags. In addition, Macy's has encouraged nearly 1.5 million customers to review their credit card statements on-line versus paper by mail.
Building on the progress Macy's has made in 2008 and 2009, we will reduce the amount of paper we use by at least another 10 percent by 2013 (from the 2009 levels). We will also increase the percentage of recycled (10 percent PCW or higher) and/or third-party certified paper we use in marketing materials to 70 percent by 2013 from 63 percent in 2009 (up from 3 percent in 2006).
In December 2009, ForestEthics highly rated Macy's on their fourth annual scorecard on the direct mail industry. Bloomingdale's was credited with phasing out its catalog by increasing post-consumer recycled content from 10 percent to 30 percent.
Keep in mind that any customer who does not want to receive catalogs from Macy's or Bloomingdale's can call 866-593-2543 to have their names deleted from our mailing lists.

Perhaps Corner Bakery has adopted more earth-friendly practices by now, but the last visit I paid them, I found that all tableware was disposable, regardless of whether you're eating in or taking out, and there were zero recycling bins (most likely because they're not using recyclable plastics). Go back to ceramicware for customers eating in, hire back those dishwashers ... and offer recyclable plastics for the take out, especially cups. All the condiments were in single use packets ... let's put out salt, pepper and sugar shakers again.

I just received a coupon mailing from the CVS on El Monte Avenue, Mountain View, and one of the three coupons were for $3 off on Aquafina Water, 24 pack, 16.9 oz bottles. This encourages consumers to buy even more disposable bottled water. I hope that CVS can instead give coupons for more eco-friendly products, such as BPA-free water bottles, or notebooks with recycled paper.

I have flown San Jose to Vancouver couple times this year on United Airlines (run as a codeshare with Air Canada). When I ask for a cup of hot tea, I recorded the high number of disposable materials being served -- 2 styrofoam cups stacked together (presumably because it is hot), a plastic cup to hold: single-serve sugar packet, stirrer, single-serve creamer, tissue paper. When I asked for a refill, the flight attendant gave me another set of the above before I could ask them to reuse the cup. Suggestion: Why not ask the customer first to reuse, or whether she brought a mug? The plastic cup and the extra styrofoam cup are also unnecessary. Better still, how about small reusable cups like what Singapore Airline uses?

Instead this week I get a 12 page catalog. So what was the point of being taken off your mailing list? Seems like I tried to do the right thing but instead ended up with more waste.

Hooray for pretty good food. Big portions mean stuff to bring home. Unfortunately they use styrofoam containers! Fresh Food in not so fresh to-go boxes. Useless once you get them home. Too big to keep things warm. Unsealed so things tend to spill.

This painting contractor is practicing Green. Avi, the principal, is very knowledgeable about hazardous materials, safer zero VOC paints, ventilation, how to save money (with an attic fan versus a air-conditioner, for example), and many tips around the house. I got his help with choosing the right colors when he painted large swatches on my walls for my family to see. The price was good, the work was detailed and quality! This was a great way to sustain my investment. Also, Avi is licensed and legal and he disposes paints and materials legally - this point was important for me, too.

I recently stayed in Kissimmee in a rental house to visit Disney. I cannot believe that the City of Kissimmee does not have residential curbside recycling. We considered taking our recyclables into Disney World to avoid putting them into the trash. Disney has a lot of messaging about respecting the earth and looking after it. It is a shame that the City of Kissimmee does not support the messaging in the same way.

I bought 7 items from Kmart today - the actual receipt was almost 15 inches long, in addition I got 32 inches of offers on receipt paper. Total of 47 inches for 7 items. Multiply that my the number of shoppers. This is a huge waste of paper - can you think about reducing the amount you use?

I am staying at the Hollywood Renaissance at a conference. I have a lot of paper from the conference that I would like to recycle but dont see recycling facilities available to guests. Your online policy statement states a goal of: "Expanding existing “reduce, reuse, recycle†programs already in place in 90 percent of hotels to consistently include guest and meeting rooms, beginning with pilot hotels across all brands in Boston, Chicago, Denver, Los Angeles, Minneapolis and Washington, D.C."
I am wondering why this LA based hotel is not part of that 90%? Could you consider making this available in the future?
Also, could you consider replacing the disposable cups in the rooms with reusable cups?

I just used the Redwood City FoodsCo which is a Kroger supermarket. I could not find any organic foods there. And, despite the claims made in your 2008 Sustainability report about promoting reusable bags, I could not see any (except the one I had brought into the store myself). There was only plastic bags on offer, not even a paper alternative.

When the stewardess collected trash close to the end of the flight they also annouced that they would be collecting recyclables such as the plastic cups and bottles used in the beverage service. This is a great step but they should also collect paper, such as magazines, for recycling.

Hi
I have e-mailed you before about the 11" by 6" 'postcard' coupons that are mass mailed out. Have you assessed how much paper (or rather trees) are wasted by this practice? I know you also e-mail coupons out. Cant you switch to an e-mail system only to save paper? Or make your postcards smaller and out of recycled paper?

I have been a SmileSavers member for a long time and the thing that always upsets me is the additional photos you print with an order in an attempt to make the customer buy more stuff from you.
Its not the solicitation for additional purchases that upsets me - its the huge waste of paper and chemicals wasted on these unwanted products. I got 4 additional photos with one order - if each customer gets 4, I dread to think how much waste there is overall.
In a time where we need to conserve and use less, I think Sears should no longer produce these unwanted photos.

I saw Chip Conley give a speech at the Opportunity Green conference in LA last December. I was insprired by his story of greening the hotel chain.
Today we had a firm meeting in Los Gatos and I was excited to see that it was at the Jdv hotel. I was disppointed however to see that disposable cups were used for coffee and bottled water was put out at each seat. I asked one of the catering staff why you could not use ceramic cups for coffee and pitchers/glasses for the water. The response was that it is easier to clean a room during meeting breaks when using disposable cups.
I have been at other meeting locations where glasses and cups are used and other hotels (who do not have a green brand to protect) have found a way to make this work. I was very disappointed with the waste taking place at Jvd Los Gatos. Please could you look into using reusable cups and glasses for meeetings?

On a recent flight from Philadelphia to SFO, the flight attendant was serving me coffee. She put the stirrer in a plastic cup to give to me. I protested saying that I did not need a cup just to hold my stirrer. The response was that she was used to doing it that way. I was amazed at her lack of environmental concern.
I am guessing that if she serves 200 cups of coffee/tea a day an additional 200 cups are handed out just for the stirrers and cream. Over the course of the year that is close to 48,000 plastic cups unnecessarily wasted. Could you consider educating the flight attendants so they are more environmentally responsible?

On the flight from Chicago to San Jose, I think the flight attendants offered drinks 3 times, each time giving people a new cup. Why not suggest that they keep their cups and reuse them?

I noticed that your Good Neighbor policy states: "Extensive recycling programs including office paper, newspapers, aluminum, plastic, and the purchase of recycled products when possible."
I am staying at the Philadelphia Market St site which is a business hotel. There is no in-room recycling for guests. Would you please consider adding in-room recycling?

I recently ate at the Sheraton Waikiki (Ingredeints Restaurant), even though I said I wanted to eat on the patio, I was given a styrofoam clamshell, twice the size of my sandwich. The only drink options were in bottles and I had to stop the cashier from putting my purchase in a plastic bag. There was no recycling facilities on site - the trash cans had lots of cans and bottles.
Cant Sheraton implment some better environmental policies? Recyclying bins as a minimum would be great.

I have a concern was about the 20% off vouchers (on postcard 7" x 11") that I frequently get. I am not sure how often you send these out but I usually have about 2 that have not passed their expiry date at any one time. Again not sure how many people you send this to, but I bet it's a lot of paper.
Don't get me wrong - I love 20% off BUT could you think about the following:
- using recycled paper for the postcard?
- printing your coupon online so customers can print only when they need to?
- sending out less coupons but with a longer life?
Any of these would lead to less paper usage.

I e-mailed a question like this before but got no response. I have a concern about your compostable cups - I applaud you for changing to a 'greener' cup but am concerned that the end result will be no different - is your Ecotainer will end up in landfills and unable to compost. Would you consider having a compostable bin for these cups in each store? Or providing the consumer information on how to compost these cups?

We just ordered delivery pizza from the San Jose location. The pizza was delicious - thank you. But in addition to our order we got 3 magnets with the Amicis phone number and about 4 menus as well. I think these items are not necessary and it would be good to cut down on potential waste.

I love that you are now using the Green Cups - thank you for doing this!
Could you provide some education to consumers so that these cups do not end up in the trash regardless? I did not notice any signs or special 'recycle' bins in the San Francisco Fremont St branch.

We reserved a midsize car at the Denver airport for a short vacation to visit friends and family in October. When we arrived, they told us they had run out of midsize, so had upgraded us. We assumed it would just be a slightly larger car. When we went out to the designated spot on the lot, it was a freaking Hummer! We refused to drive a Hummer and went back in and requested a different car. I can understand wanting to offer 4 wheel drives in Denver, but a Toyota Highlander Hybrid, a Ford Escape Hybrid, or a Suburu would be just fine for the snow and alot more environmentally responsible!

HiI am a big coffee shop consumer and despite your many CSR initiatives, I am always surprised that Starbucks (in the US) uses disposable cups even for those comsumers who are eating in. In England, every Starbucks uses ceramic cups for people who are not taking out.Surely as a company you have the process for using ceramic cups, can you consider deploying this in the US?
Alternatively, Tully's has a disposal cup which is 100% compostable - would you consider going down that route?
